A couple of weeks ago, I got to try out the new Hubbox restaurant in Cardiff Bay with the other food editors for Quench, Indigo and Sasha. We had unlimited access to the menus, and were given goodie bags when we arrived so we were certainly treated well!
From the moment we walked in the door, the staff were very friendly and helped us get settled straight away. The vibe was very energetic, and the music quite loud, but it did make for a very fun evening. To get started, I went for an espresso martini. The drink was extremely smooth and velvety, and started the night off on a great foot!
Often, I avoid going to burger restaurants because the focus can be so much on the beef and chicken options that the veggie and vegan burgers can get overlooked. There's often only one meat-free option available which takes away the excitement of getting to choose something you're really craving. However, Hubbox really delivered with five vegetarian and vegan options! There were two vegetable-based patties, a halloumi patty, and two plant-based patties. It was the perfect scenario where every single one of these burgers sounded so delicious, that I'd have been very happy with any of them.
Nevertheless, I went for the Swiss Julie: a plant-based patty tipped with creamed garlic mushrooms, vegan cheese, lettuce, and vegan garlic mayo. Whenever I see 'garlic' and 'mushrooms' together on anything I am there for it, and this burger did not disappoint. The garlic flavour was the perfect amount and didn't overpower the rest of the burger. The vegan cheese was beautifully melted and I wouldn't have know it was vegan at all.
Alongside the burger, I ordered the skin-on fries and halloumi fries. The skin on fries were hot, fresh, and crisp. My only criticism is that they were too salty for my liking, so next time I would probably ask for no salt so I could choose the amount myself. I wouldn't normally oder both chips and halloumi fries, but I'm so glad I did. The halloumi fries were the best I've ever had, and they were made even better by the fact that there were so many options of dips to go with them. I went for the BBQ sauce which made them taste deliciously smokey and cut through the salty cheese perfectly.
Sadly we were all far too stuffed to try out the desserts, which did look really tasty. Instead, we all went for an espresso martini, making it my second. It was the perfect alternative to dessert as they were lovely and sweet, and certainly finished the night off in the right way!
