My covid-19 summer: A reflection

Everything's been feeling a bit upside down It's crazy to think about how different the world looked at the beginning of 2020. Now, phrases such as 'social distancing', 'the new normal' and 'key workers' are part of our vocabulary like they've always been there. Tiger King, 'Run 5 Tag 5 Donate 5', and staring in disbelief at the empty supermarket shelves, wondering how you're supposed to make banana bread now everyone else has had the same idea...  As scientists discovered more about the virus every day, and cases and deaths seem to be doing nothing but rise, these qualms allowed us to feel united from afar. Not being able to find toilet paper began to feel quite comforting. Nobody's going to forget these times, especially those who have lost loved ones or been seriously ill from the virus. My heart goes out to everyone that has, and if that's you, I am so sorry. Another way lots of people have been affected by covid-19 is through...

5 healthy(ish) snacks to get you through the day

If I could, I would happily spend all day every day eating pizza and chocolate cake. But  as heavenly as that sounds, I'm well aware that if this actually was my reality, my body would not thank me very much in the long run.  So, if there's any ways I can eat my favourite foods as much as I like without feeling like I've eaten far too much every time, I am so there for it. Sometimes there's nothing quite eating the original, and of course, sometimes I will. Also, there are a lot of claims out there for 'healthier' versions of food that are either: a) actually not that much healthier, or b) so different that there's simply no point- you might as well just enjoy the original (and maybe go on a walk afterwards). But this isn't always the case. When I'm craving any of these five foods but I fancy a lighter version, these are my go to swaps that are still satisfying for both my cravings and hunger. 1. Tortilla pizza I've seen this been made hundreds o...

5 reasons to quit fast fashion right now

Since  Vidhathri Matety  went undercover at a factory in Leicester making clothes for Boohoo and found terrible working conditions, the hashtag #BoycottBoohoo  has been found all over Twitter and Instagram.  Great- this news story is raising awareness of the exploitative nature of fast fashion, but why is such an uproar being caused now, when this is not a new problem? Yes, scandals appear in the news every so often (think the  £1 Missguided bi kini ), but we hear about them, make a fuss, and then forget about it.  Simply boycotting Boohoo is not enough. Just because other brands such as H&M and SHEIN are not being targeted in the news right now, it doesn't mean they are any better. To make a real difference, we need to commit to stop buying from all fast fashion brands, even when it's not flooding our newsfeeds. Over 600 items added  per day-  on a site ever-increasing in popularity. The biggest excuse I've heard countless times for continui...

Lockdown Baking Series: 4. 'Make It Your Own' Granola

Coconut yoghurt, granola, sliced strawberries  and banana sprinkled with chia seeds... what better way to start the day? For those of you that know me well, I hate getting up with a passion. When I have to get up early I'll sit blinking at you for twenty minutes until my brain and body catch up with each-other, and don't even think about asking me to do something for you. But, I also hate doing nothing, so wanting to sleep and be busy is not exactly the easiest conflict to solve (and yes, I have tried going to bed earlier. It doesn't work- I just end up sleeping even longer). If I do wake up late I usually skip breakfast and have an early lunch, but this always ends with me eating rubbish in the evenings. I love the fact that there are so many options for breakfast, but what I don't love is the idea of eating them when I've just woken up. I'm much more of a 'eat breakfast food at dinner time' kind of girl, but that leaves me stuck for what to actually e...

Self-isolating? Here's some top tips for keeping busy and having fun!

Heading inside for the next couple of weeks is the best option to keep ourselves and others safe from Covid-19. So, if you need some inspiration for ways to stay entertained, then check out my top 6 tips below: 1. Board Games Olympics. (Shout out to the Godfrey clan for this idea.) Playing board games is a great way to while away the afternoon, but if you want to make it a bit more competitive, then why not turn it into a longer running competition? Depending on how many people you're playing with, award each person the amount of points depending on which place you came. So, if there's five people playing, the winner gets five points, and second place gets four...to the person in last place getting one. Then, whoever has the most points at the end is the winner. Go as crazy as you want for the awards ceremony, depending on how dramatic/ competitive you all are. My new photo wall to remind me of my uni room. 2. Get crafting! Painting by numbers is a relaxing activit...
