With more and more supermarkets jumping on the bandwagon and releasing new products during Veganuary, I thought I'd review some of the new things I try whilst I take up the challenge. I'll be trying to cook more from scratch throughout the month too, so keep an eye out for some posts about my favourite recipes too!
Gregg's Vegan Sausage Rolls (Iceland: Bake at Home, £2.50 for 4)
I've had the Gregg's Vegan sausage roll countless times, but more often than not, it's cold by the time I buy it so it's often a bit disappointing. So, when I noticed these, I bought them purely so that I could finally try one hot! They take 30 minutes to bake from frozen, but it was worth the wait! They were just as good as I was expecting and work out a bit cheaper than going to Gregg's, so it's a win win.
ALDI Pain au Chocolat (£1.49 for 8)
These were placed at the end of a random aisle and I almost didn't notice they were vegan, so it's a good job I was checking everything! I tried the vegan croissants last year and these were really tasty, so I had high hopes. However, I was a little disappointed. They're on par to normal supermarket's pain au chocolat, and similarly are wrapped in individual packets so there's a lot of single use plastic. They'd probably taste better warmed, but they were nothing to shout about.
ALDI Plant Menu Chocsticks (£1.99 for 3)
For me, the Magnum vegan ice creams are too big and too rich, so when I saw ALDI sold a smaller (and cheaper) version, I knew I had to try them. They came in double chocolate, salted caramel, and original flavours, and being a chocoholic I had to go for the double chocolate. This reminded me more of a Feast rather than a Magnum, but it was still really delicious. I didn't really notice the chocolate swirl, but I didn't mind because the crunch pieces in the chocolate shell made up for it- they were really tasty! I'll definitely be buying these again.
ALDI Plant Menu Coleslaw (£0.79 for 300g)
I wanted to make my own coleslaw, but my local ALDI didn't sell the new Plant Menu mayonnaise so I picked this up instead. It looked far too creamy for my liking, so before even trying it I added more grated carrot and red cabbage. This made it a lot lighter which I liked, but the mayonnaise wasn't very smooth. I don't know if they're all like this or if mine had split or something, but it didn't make it the most appealing texture. If I was desperate I would buy this again, but I'd rather make my own so I can get it exactly how I like. I'm glad they hadn't driven up the price though, just because it was vegan- that made a refreshing change!
The vegan sausage rolls are amazing! I was in ALDI yesterday and was so happy to see the new vegan ice cream selection! I bought the chocolate brownie tub was is nice but I wish it had more brownie pieces in!
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked the sausage rolls, I've heard good things about that ice cream, was it expensive?
